Womb transplant: Motherhood was once ‘her’ dream, but now it’s a reality

On May 18, 2017, the baby’s mother, Meenakshi Walan, got a uterus transplant. Meenakshi’s mother had donated her uterus to her, because her daughter's uterus was damaged and she couldn’t conceive a baby. And now, 17 months after getting her mother’s womb, Meenakshi has delivered a baby girl at the Galaxy Care Hospital, in Pune, on October 18

“I am extremely happy. Something that was impossible two years ago, is a reality today. I wanted a child from such long time and today I have one. My joy knows no bounds. I cannot express my happiness. I am experiencing this kind of happiness for the first time,” said Meenakshi Walan, Vadodara woman who has become first in India who has given birth to a baby girl, after a successful uterus transplant.

While the parents have not thought about any name for their daughter, Dr Shailesh Puntambekar, who performed the procedure of uterus transplant on her, has named her as Radha.

Tears were rolling down from her cheeks as she was talking. With every sentence she was becoming more emotional.

“I have been living here in the hospital since a very long time now. I now have a sense of fulfilment, as I have my own kid now. I am very happy and there are no words to express my happiness,” Walan said.

“I spoke with my wife in the morning and we both could not speak much as were speechless due to the good news. It is the day of Dusshera today and we have got a wonderful gift in our life, a baby girl, of our own” said the father of the newborn baby girl.

The grandmother of the baby girl, said, “I took a decision to transfer my womb to my daughter and today my daughter delivered my granddaughter. I am very happy that I could help my daughter in giving her an experience of becoming a mother.”

According to the doctors from Pune’s Galaxy Care Hospital, the woman gave birth to the baby girl at 12:12 a.m., on Thursday, October 18.

A team of doctors led by Dr Shailesh Puntambekar, Director of Galaxy Care Hospital performed the delivery procedure.

While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Shailesh Puntambekar, Director of Pune’s Galaxy Care Laparoscopic Institute said, “I am very happy and satisfied today. Today is the most important day of my life. The baby girl weighed about 1.450 kgs. We performed the uterus transplant laparoscopically and it was a caesarean delivery. This is the first-of-its-kind delivery which has been performed in the world.”
