Local is Mumbai’s lifeline, more than 70 lakhs passengers commute from the local train. People board the jam-packed trains by risking their lives. Also, there is always a competition for 4 th seat. Beware! As, this local journey can take a toll on your health


Madam! Where will you get down? Please give me your seat… Are few questions, often asked by the other commuters while travelling by a local train. People are tired; carry heavy bags and other belongings, while trying to board the strain there is a strain on hands and legs and people even tend to injure themselves. And in this, if you even fail to get a fourth seat, then you will have to travel to your destination by standing itself.

Speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Pradeep Bhosale, Director, arthritis and joint replacement surgery, Nanavati Hospital said, “People have to stand with heavy baggage for hours. This can lead to shoulder pain. Those who travel everyday don’t recognise it. But, those who travel rarely can feel it. Further, it can result into injuries too.”

  • Don’t sit for too long, during a long distance journey

Dr Kaushal Malhan, orthopaedic surgeon at Fortis Hospital, Mulund said, “While travelling by local train, they perform stunts and before the train stops, they try to get down. Which can  lead to wear and tear of the knees or neck sprain. So, a timely treatment can save the patient.”
