Shikha Khandelwal was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 when she was pregnant. 33-years-old then, she took the struggle head on and fought it with grace. Happily, delivered her child.
It all began in July 2015, when she started getting breathless and found lumps in her breast. So she visited Dr LH Hiranandani hospital at Powai. When some of the medical tests were done at the hospital she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The family got a shock when they heard this. They feared if the foetus could get it.
That’s when she was taken to Tata hospital where Dr Jyoti Vajpeyi assured her that the child will not get cancer. Special care was taken while delivering and treatment. Though she was pregnant, she was treated with 16 radiations and chemotherapies. After all this, she delivered a child after one month. The boy is now 2-years-old and is living a healthy life.
Dr Vajpeyi said, “When Shikha came to us, her condition was very bad. She was six months pregnant and we had to take care that her child remains healthy. We had informed about everything to Shikha and her family and then only we started with the treatment.”
Khandelwal thanks the doctors for the healthy child and her present condition. “I was very tensed when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had almost given up on living. But Dr Vajpeyi gave me support. It is only because of the help of doctor that I fought this disease. She introduced me to a gynaecologist. I, then delivered the child in Wadia hospital. My son is 2-years-old now and he is healthy boy. Doctors have given me a new life. Now I just need to go for regular check-up after every three months.”
