Talks about granting a leave on the first day of periods have been underway for the past few months. As a first, Shivsena corporator- Sheetal Mhatre has given letter to mayor Mahadeshwar, regarding this on Wednesday. In this letter, she has demanded that women working in government, semi-government and private organisations should necessarily get an off.
While talking to My Medical Mantra, Mhatre says, “Menstrual cycle is a natural process. During these days, women endure great pain, without voicing the pain openly. And that is why, we are asking for leave. Women work for 8-9 hours at a stretch, but it becomes difficult during the menstruation days. And that is why this leave is important. However, the reason should not be misused and proper guidelines should be stetup.”
Pune’s non-governmental organization (NGO) Roshni has moved a step further to make the first day of period as a paid leave in organizations by petitioning to the HRD ministry. Many countries around the world, grant leave to women on the first day of their periods. And in the country also, many private organisations are granting leaves to their female employees.
