Certain fruits may cause your blood sugars to spike at a quicker pace than others. The tricky part about eating with diabetes is that everyone responds to food differently.

Consume fruit in its whole, natural form, and avoid syrups or any processed fruits with added sugar, which have the tendency to spike your blood sugar. Stick to the produce aisle and the freezer section of your grocery store.

While it is true that patient with type 1 and type 2 diabetes must avoid certain fruits, experts have advised that they should refrain from consuming foods high in sugar content. But, they shouldn’t cut out fruits from their diet.

Health experts state that it is vital for patients to know at what times they can consume these fruits. As blood sugar levels can cause spike after eating fruits, it is advisable to eat fruits during meal times.

While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Roshani Gadge, a diabetologist, consultant, Gadge Diabetes Centre, Mumbai, stated, “Diabetic patients should avoid foods which have high sugar content. Instead they opt for fruits like guava, pears, watermelons, and apples which have a low sugar content. While it is beneficial for us to eat raw fruits, eating overripe fruits can be hazardous to our health due to their increase sugar content.”

Dr Gadge further said, “A person with diabetes should aim to have a bowl of mixed fruits each day. They should chose to have their fruits around 11 a.m. in the morning or 5 p.m. in the evening. Avoiding eating fruits during the night, but, if you wish to do so, consume fruits two hours after eating your dinner.”

Fruits which suffering from diabetes need to avoid:

  • Grapes
  • Banana
  • Mango
  • Chikoo
  • Custard apple

While Dr Shilpa Joshi, Vice President of Indian Diabetic Association, said, “Patients with type 2 diabetes should consume their fruits during the interval between lunch and dinner. And patients with type 1 diabetes should eat fruits while their insulin is active. But, it is important that diabetics should avoid fruits which are high in sugar content.”
