Bottled water popularly called as ‘alkaline water’ or ‘black water’ is becoming a new luxury for health-conscious Punekars. Many shops and shopping malls in the city have started selling this water.

My Medical Mantra spoke to a few nutritionists to gauge their opinion on this new health trend. To know whether they are any health benefits or health hazards to consuming this kind of bottled water.

The nutritionists offer a deeper perspective and help us come to a better understanding of this current health fad, which has attracted the youth of Pune towards it.

Suvarna Joshi, a nutritionist from Pune, said, “If you have a specific health condition like kidney disease, excessive intake of minerals might end up in creating more health complications. There is still no conclusive research about its health benefits which come without any side effects.”

These water bottles are enriched with around 70 plus minerals and they have zero calories. Also, these waters have a pH scale that is less acidic, which simply puts gives superior hydration, better detoxification, improved metabolism, and heightened alertness.

While the price of such bottled water is often more expensive than bottled water, it is not stopping the health-conscious youngsters to include it in their grocery list. Many big sports players seen to be drinking it daily, and youngsters have emulated this and it has now become a new rage among them.

Here’s what a youth had to say about this new health fad and how the price isn’t a deterrent for him.

Sawan Mehta, a software professional from Pune, said, “I had ordered it online. There is still a handful of brands that are selling them. Many of my colleagues and friends also have bought it. There are many minerals which we do not get by drinking regular water. I did a lot of online searches for it. I found many health benefits that pushed me towards buying it.”

Today’s supermarket shelves are flooded with a variety of alternatives to plain H2O water. Apart from natural mineral waters from Himalayan springs, there are varieties like fruit flavours, activated charcoal and vitamin infusions. ‘Alkaline water’ is the newest healthy water trend that has entered India recently.

Walk into any popular shopping mall in the crowded camp area of Pune and you will find a separate table marketing health benefits of the ‘alkaline water.’

Many youngsters are willing to try it on and give it a go. Manufacturers claim alkaline water can boost energy or hydration, aid in digestion, or strengthen bones because it neutralises acid in the body

Alkaline water has been thought to provide better hydration, especially for athletes. It has also made it to the detox list for health foods.

The premium water market is increasing in India. Some new brands have launched their product recently in the country. There are some global brands that have their presence on online platforms for sale.

Nikita Jain, another nutritionist from Pune, said, “Many sportspersons are found to be using it. Though it is luxury water, many youngsters are asking us about whether they should opt for it. But, there is no scientific evidence that fully verifies the claims made by supporters of alkaline water. Though it is a new fashion one should not stop drinking regular water.”

The terms acid and alkaline refer to the pH level of a water-based solution. The pH scale runs from 0 to 14, with 0 being completely acidic, 14 being totally alkaline and 7 being neutral. Lemon juice has a pH of 2, while baking soda has a pH of 9. Water, including tap water, has a pH of 7, or neutral.

Alkaline water has a pH of up to 8 or 9. It can be naturally alkaline (for example, spring water can contain minerals that make it more alkaline), or it can be ionized to make it that way.
