Ankita (name changed) a 22-day-old girl, who was suffering from a serious heart ailment, could not avail of any government scheme as her parents hailed from Karnataka. Prompt financial assistance was urgent for her to survive.

In the meanwhile, a well-to-do family had shown interest in contributing money for a person who was in need of help. The hospital authorities got in touch with them and ensured that the family got the help they deserved.

While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Satyawan Surwase, medical social worker at Sassoon General Hospital, said, “The baby girl was suffering from a congenital heart ailment. Surgery was urgently required to save her life. As her parents hailed from Karnataka, she was not eligible for Maharashtra government’s health scheme for the poor. Around the same time a family had shown interest in donating money for some needy case. We then contacted them and immediately got it done.”

According to official data, the hospital got Rs 120 crore philanthropic funds to buy medical instruments for the last financial year, but got only around 2 to 3 lakh of funds from individual donors to treat patients who faced a medical emergency.

The hospital administration says with more individual donors much help could be given for many to live disease free life.

M B Shelke, Superintendent MSW, SGH, said, “We get very few individual donors. Around 10 to 12 cases of individual donors come and donate to us. It would be helpful for patients who couldn’t get government benefits due to some technical issues.”

Dr Harish Tatiya, Professor of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, said, “Around 2 to 3 lakhs, we get through individual donors. But it would be of good help for needy patients if more such donations happen. Also, donations to SGH are eligible for tax exemption. We appeal that more individual donors should come forward.”
