As a part of their campaign, doctors will be going to different slums in the city and will make people understand how this disease needs a specific medical treatment. They will explain them about the disease and tell them rational measures to be when treating a person with this condition.
While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Niteen Abhivant, HOD of psychiatric department at Sassoon Hospital, said, “Many times a person who has some kind of mental illness is taken to a temple or some ‘holy man.’ There are many superstitions associated with it. People don’t understand that mental illnesses like schizophrenia are treatable and such people should be taken to a psychiatrist.”
The psychiatrist department is tying up with different NGO’s who will help them connect with different communities. The department staff and students will go to such different communities across the city and will spread awareness about the mental health condition.”
In conclusion, Dr Abhivant said, “We want to give this message to the people that – schizophrenia is treatable. A patient should be taken to the hospital. If proper doses of medicine are given, then the person can lead a normal life. The awareness will be created through having a dialogue with the people.”
