With the demand to make ‘Clinical Establishment Act’ patient-centric, around 15 patients went on a one-day ‘satyagraha’ in Nagpur on Thursday. These patients, along with ‘Jan Aarogya Abhiyan’ – a network of 50 NGO’s, have submitted their demands to the Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Health Minister Deepak Sawant.

Dr Satish Gogawale, the member of Jan Aarogya Abhiyan, Vidarbha region, said, “The condition of public healthcare in the state is not good. Poor people are forced to go for private healthcare. And, this leading to a rise in out-of-pocket expenses for the poor people. People from rural parts are in debt because of increased healthcare expenditure.”

The 15 patients that are participating in the ‘satyagraha’ have their own experiences with the healthcare system in India. These patients are submitting the problems that they faced. These patients come from Yawatmal, Latur, Pune, Chandrapur, and Mumbai districts of Maharashtra.

Vinod Shende, one of the people participating in Satyagraha, said, “There are many gaps in how the government regulates the private healthcare sector. We want the government to regulate the private healthcare sector in the interest of the patients. Things like transparency in rates and rate standardisation with multi-stakeholder participation should be ensured in the private sector.”
