Bogus pathology labs are rampant across the state and in Mumbai. The presence of such labs can be detrimental to the health of patients. Because if doctors rely on these reports then the patient can be treated wrongly. Such places play with the life of patients.
To keep this in check the Maharashtra Association of Practising Pathologist and Microbiologists had asked the state government to find out the number of fake pathology labs. The state government, in turn, had instructed that municipal corporations of Mumbai, Thane, Panvel, Pune, Aurangabad, and Nashik to conduct a survey within their municipal limits to find the number of bogus pathologists and send a report to the state government.
But in an RTI filed by the Maharashtra Association of Practising Pathologist and Microbiologists it was revealed that apart from Nashik, no other municipal corporation showed seriousness in pursuing this matter.
While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Prasad Kulkarni, a member of Maharashtra Association of Practising Pathologist and Microbiologists, said, “Bogus pathologists are operating in Maharashtra and Mumbai and such labs are increasing in number. It is important for action to be taken against these labs. But there is no information about the legal and illegal labs which are in existence. That is why the medical education department had instructed municipal corporations to carry out a survey.”
Dr Kulkarni added, “Excluding a few municipal corporations. Mumbai, Thane, Panvel, Pune, Aurangabad, and Nashik’s civic bodies were asked to conduct the survey. Pune and Aurangabad municipal corporations did not carry out the survey.”
