  • The Maharashtra state Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has revoked the licenses of four Blood banks in Mumbai.
  • According to an FDA official, several lapses were found during an inspection which was carried out in around 55 blood banks across the city. 
  • Among the lapses were, less number of staff, wastage of the blood collected, etc., behind the FDA’s action   
  • The Joint Commissioner FDA (Drugs), Arjun Khadtare, informed, “Action has been initiated against one Pallavi Blood bank in Govandi, Samarpan Blood bank, Sant Nirankari Blood Bank, and VN Desai Blood bank. 

While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Arjun Khadtare said, “Every year, we carry out an inspection of the blood banks across the city, it’s an ongoing process. During the inspection of 55 blood banks, we found that there were several lapses in four of them where the laid procedures were not followed. So, we took action against four blood banks who were violating the law.”

He further said, “The FDA has issued a show cause notice to all the blood banks. We have received their replies, which were found to be unsatisfactory. So, the FDA has initiated an action against them.”

While speaking to My Medical Mantra, an officer from Samarpan blood bank, on condition of anonymity, said, “We are in touch with the FDA authorities, we have 120 children listed with us who are suffering from Thalassemia. Now, where will the children go?”

While, the Maharashtra government has stayed the order issued by the Food and Drug Administration, revoking the license of the V.N.Desai blood bank.
