Blood-shortage-1-701x379

The population of the state is 11.13 million and according to the criteria of World Health Organization, one per cent of the blood collection is required and the state needs 11 lakh units of blood. Last year, Maharashtra secured first place in the country through blood donation. As 16, 17,000 units blood was collected. As per the state health department, Maharashtra is ahead in the number of blood banks.

Talking about Mumbai, Dr Deepak Sawant, the state health minister said, “In Mumbai, every year, 2 lakh 20 thousand units of blood is expected to be collected. Considering the number of patients coming from other parts of the state and other states in Mumbai, and considering the requirement of blood for them, Mumbai collected three lakh units of blood through 59 blood banks last year. The voluntary blood donation ratio in Mumbai is 96.44 per cent.”

He added, “Last year, in October 2016, the blood collection in Mumbai was 21,872 units whereas in the same period this year, the blood storage is 22,850 units. In comparison to last year, there has been a lot of blood collection in Mumbai during blood shortage. In the last three days, In Mumbai, in all the blood banks 2,500 to 3,000 units of blood is available.”

Mumbai needs 900 units of blood every day. But due to the absence of blood donation camps due to the holidays in the months of October and November, there can be a shortage of blood. To overcome this, all blood banks were ordered by SBTC to organise blood donation camps near railway stations and other places with the help of NGO’s and private companies.

Often, some blood for the patients is reserved therefore; needy patients are informed that there is no blood. So, blood banks should plan and collect blood. People should donate blood regularly. Dr Sawant appealed to the NGO’s and other organisations working in this area to conduct blood donation camps.
