  • After the pharmacist from Karnataka, the Maharashtra Registered Pharmacists Association has also raised the demand for a bridge course to provide health services.
  • The Maharashtra Registered Pharmacists Association has written a letter to the union health ministry in this regard.

The pharmacists have demanded a six-month bridge course, which will enable them to provide services in the community health and wellness centre.

While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Kailash Tandale, President, Maharashtra Registered Pharmacists Association, said, “A pharmacist learns pharmacology, and he has more knowledge about medicines as compared to the MBBS or Ayurveda doctors. So, our simple demand is, if the government is considering a bridge course to the Ayurveda and dentists, then why not us?”

The union health ministry is contemplating a bridge course for the dentists to practice family medicine. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has already raised a strong objection to the proposal.

Also, in a state like Maharashtra, the Ayurveda doctors are eligible to practice allopathy medicines after completing a bridge course.

“Giving a bridge course to the pharmacists to practice community medicine will not yield any result. The person who has gained knowledge in a particular subject should practice it. If a pharmacist wants to provide health services, then he/she should do the MBBS course. The bridge course will have its impact on the patients,” said Dr Shivkumar Utture, a member of the Indian Medical Council.
