While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Suresh Birajdar, Consultant, Paediatrics & Neonatology, Motherhood Hospital, Kharghar, informed, “Preemies have underdeveloped body parts that are lungs, digestive system, immune system, and skin. But, now due to the medical advances, the survival rate of premature babies has increased. Likewise, proper care is also essential for your preemie to help him lead a healthy life.”

Know how to care for your preemie

NICU care: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) can help provide specialised care for babies who have serious health problems. The NICU is well-equipped and has the expertise to provide the preemies all the around-the-clock care and support. They can help preemies breathe, fed and keep them warm.

Kangaroo Mother care for your baby: It is a technique in which there is a skin-to-skin contact for an extended period wherein the mother held the baby by the chest. It is much needed for the babies. Moreover, doing so can also help strengthen the bond between the baby and the mother.

Keeping infections at bay: It is essential to safeguard the baby from infections and allergies. Thus, anyone who touches the baby, or the mother should make sure that the hands are clean. Keep doing medical examinations and required procedures from time to time. See to it that your baby is breathing normally after birth. Ventilation with a bag or a mask can be used to help the baby breathe freely.

Know the importance of breastfeeding: It is no brainer that breast milk is the best nutrition for your baby. So, make sure that you breastfeed your baby soon after he/she is born. But, most of the time, the preemies can’t suck or swallow and are fed with the help of a cup or a spoon or a nasogastric tube.

How to take care of your preemies at home?

Ensure that your baby is sleeping well: You MUST provide your baby with a peaceful environment for sleeping. See to it that your baby follows good sleep hygiene. Make sure that your baby’s room is dimly lit which will aid proper sleep. Keep noise away from your baby as it can cause a disturbance.

Maintain the correct room temperature: See to it that you ensure proper room temperature. It shouldn’t be too cold or too hot. Dress up your baby properly by making him/her wear a sleepsuit and opt for blankets that will keep him/her warm.

A word of caution: Preemies are at a higher risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) wherein healthy babies die in their sleep, and the causes of it are unknown. Thus, it is required to use a light-weight blanket from your baby which should be kept away from the face. Ensure that your baby sleeps in the right position advised by the doctor. Also, avoid smoking in the house.
