Stress, anxiety, peer pressure, and, competition are taking a toll on the human mind. Owing to which a lot of people are suffering from mental illness. In India, one in twenty are suffering from mental disorders. And, the number is rising worldwide.

Mental illness is still looked upon as a stigma in India. Due to the pressure from society, a lot of people don’t come out in the open and speak about their problems.

Now, Bollywood actor Bipasha Basu has joined the campaign to end the stigma associated with mental health. Bipasha wrote on twitter, “Low awareness, Stigma, Lack of care. Those with mental health issues battle these daily. Tomorrow on World Mental Health Day join me, as I pledge with @amaniqbal and wear this grey ribbon to be there for people suffering from mental illness. I salute your resilience. #IAmHere4You”

As per the Health Management Information System:

  • From April 2018 to March 2019 – In Maharashtra, 3, 88, 503 patients were diagnosed with a mental illness
  • From within this figure – 1,10, 257 patients were diagnosed with a mental illness in Mumbai
  • From April 01, 2019 to September 30, 2019 – In Maharashtra, 1, 54, 908 patients were diagnosed with a mental illness.
  • From within this figure – 41, 624 patients were diagnosed with a mental illness in Mumbai in the first six months

Several Bollywood stars have championed the cause of mental health in the past, with Deepika Padukone being the most prominent in her support to mental health issues. Apart from Deepika Padukone, even Tahira Kashyap, the wife of Ayushman Khuranna’s has stated that she has battled against depression in the past. Shraddha Kapoor, in the past has opened up about how she struggles with anxiety. Even the Badshah of Bollywood, Shahrukh Khan has overcome depression in the past. While Dangal star, Zahira Wasim has also revealed that she went through depression at a certain point in her life. Alia Bhatt too faced problems with anxiety in her career.

Ahead of #MentalHealthDay, Bollywood’s perfectionist Aamir Khan shared a post on Instagram where he spoke about the importance of emotional hygiene.
