Heap-Of-cloths

Hoarding is the persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions, regardless of their actual value. The behaviour has deleterious effects – emotional, physical, social and financial – for a hoarder and family members. Someone who hoards may get anxious anxiety when attempting to discard items or is unable to throw away possessions.

Sinha, has been diagnosed with the same condition. “For a lot of people with hoarding personality disorder, obsession can be a by-product too. Sinha felt, if he ever gave away something, he would end up losing his good luck.  He would hoard everything from his underwear to clothes. In fact, he wouldn’t even cut his nails and hair thinking he would lose the good luck,” said Dr Sagar Karia, secretary of Bombay Psychiatric Association as well as consulting psychiatrist at Sion Hospital.

Previously, hoarding personality disorder was considered as a sub-type of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) but in the year 2013, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) categorised it as a separate disorder. This disorder however, is completely treatable.

“Hoarding personality is not very common. This can generally be a symptom of anxiety or even a part of some other illness. However, it’s important to have a timely intervention,” said Dr Parul Tank, Consultant Psychiatrist at Asian Heart, Mumbai and Fortis Hospital who is also the head of the psychiatry department at Rajawadi Hospital.
