A team of cardiac specialists at Fortis Hospital, Mulund led by Dr Anvay Mulay, Head-Cardiac Transplant Team, successfully performed a heart transplant on a 12-year-old Mumbaikar.

This feat became possible after the husband and children of a 62-year-old female from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh consented to donate her organs.

The 62-year-old donor, a homemaker, suffered a head injury in a road traffic accident and was rushed to a local hospital in Bhopal. After she was pronounced brain dead, the Medical Social Workers counselled her grieving family about organ donation.

The family consented to donate her heart, liver, kidneys and corneas. The recipient of the heart is a 12-year-old male from Mumbai; he was put on the waitlist in June 2019, after being diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy. With his heart’s pumping efficiency dropping drastically, a heart transplant was his only hope.

Conducting surgeon, Dr Anvay Mulay, Head-Cardiac Transplant Team, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, said, “The surgery has concluded, the patient will be under observation for the next 48-72 hours.”

The donor’s heart was swiftly transported from Bhopal to Fortis Hospital, Mulund covering a total distance of 693 km. Cardiac teams carrying the harvested heart reached Mumbai Airport at 10:12 am, and reached Fortis Hospital in Mulund at 10:35 am.
