Fish allergy lands Sonu Nigam in hospital

Bollywood playback singer Sonu Nigam was recently admitted to Mumbai’s Nanavati Hospital following a severe allergy he got after eating seafood. His eyes are swollen up and he is recovering right now. Nigan took to his Instagram to share his couple of pictures showcasing his swollen up face.

In the post, one picture shows his close-up shot showing his swollen eyes and the other picture show him lying on the hospital bed with an oxygen mask on his face.

Talking about the seriousness of the situation, Sonu shared that his condition would have been further alarming had there been no hospital around for immediate medical assistance.


He thanked his fans for showing care and wrote in his post, “Thanks for your concern and love. Now that you know that I am returning back from Jeypore Orissa after managing a concert last night, I now don’t mind sharing how I was the day before yesterday.”

He also wrote that he has learned a lesson. He further writes, “Lesson for all of us, Never ever ever ever take a chance with allergies. Seafood in my case. If Nanavati Hospital wasn’t nearby, my trachea would have swollen up further and lead to asphyxiation. Happy and Healthy life to everyone.”

My Medical Mantra spoke to the experts to know what a seafood allergy is. Allergic reactions to seafood can range from mild to severe and some can even be life-threatening anaphylactic reactions.

While speaking about this issue, Dr Prakash Marathe, Past President Indian Medical Association (IMA) Pune, stated, “There are various types of allergies. It is possible for people to be allergic to seafood. Although, it is rare certain people can develop seafood. There are different ways in which a person can have a reaction after consuming seafood. Some people can have redness in their eyes, irritation in eyes or watery eyes.”

While Dr Madhukar Gaikwad, medical superintendent, St George Hospital, said, “Eating seafood can cause infections. The face and lips can swell up, also swelling in eyes can occur. The windpipe and trachea can swell up and get narrow. This can cause a person to feel like they are being choked.  It is important to seek immediate treatment if this occurs.”
