Doctors attach prosthetic leg to a child with a rare birth defect

Prathmesh Dhere, is a four-year-old child, hailing from a small village in Maharashtra, he had stopped attending school since the last six months. As he was suffering from a rare congenital anomaly called tibial hemimelia, a condition wherein the lower part of leg is crooked, thus making it difficult to walk.

As it was painful to attend the school with a crooked leg, Dhere dropped out of it. Now after a surgery performed last month, an attached prosthetic leg has made walking to the school easier and less painful for the kid.

“His left leg is crooked since birth. He used to complain that walking is difficult for him and he had stopped attending the school. We searched for the treatment and then came to know that an artificial leg can help him walk,” said Sachin Dhere, his father, who lives in a small village in Karmala Taluka in Solapur district of Maharashtra.

Doctors from Sancheti hospital Pune, who operated on him, said that tibial hemimelia is a very rare condition which affects one in one lakh children.

Dr Sandip Patwardhan, a paediatric orthopaedic surgeon from the hospital who operated on him said, “This is a very rare condition. We have performed two operations on him and now he was been given a prosthetic support. With the prosthetic support and surgery, he will now be able to walk on his own. The surgery was not a major challenge for the team and we are happy that he will be able to walk on his own from now onwards.”
