Dr Lalit Anande is helping the city contain tuberculosis, first by tending to patients at Sewri TB Hospital, then taking the fight outside.

He has helped create awareness about TB in slums, homes and on trains, buses and campuses.

In a tweet, retired cricketer VVS Laxman stated:

“Dr Lalit Anande has been spreading awareness about TB prevention and coughing etiquettes to all around him.”

“Whether it is on a bus stand, amidst unmovable traffic, in local trains, slums or colleges, Dr Anande has been contributing to a very important issue of tackling TB.”

After seeing over 150 patients during his shift from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm at Sewri TB Hospital, he heads out and talks about TB prevention to students at schools and colleges, residents of high-risk neighbourhoods, commuters on trains and buses, people waiting at intersections and participants at religious gatherings.

While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Lalitkumar Anande, Medical Superintendent, Sewri TB Hospital, said, “I am very grateful that a celebrated cricketer like VVS Laxman has appreciated my work. This appreciation will help in encouraging more awareness on TB.”

Dr Anande added, “I like talking about tuberculosis, that is why I make an effort to spread awareness about it. I don’t speak about TB medications while creating awareness. I tell people about how they can prevent TB. I also tell them what steps to take while coughing and sneezing in public. If a person affected with TB coughs, then that one cough spreads 3-5 thousand bacteria. This is why I advise TB patients to cover their mouth while coughing.”

Dr Anande, dedicates 12 hours, including time at the hospital, to the TB fight almost every day and never returns home before 9:30 pm.

He has been working at 1,200-bed Sewri TB Hospital for 28 years now. Every day, the hospital admits 40 to 50 patients and gets 450 in the OPD. Dr Anande tends to many of them to ease the workload of the stretched staff.
