Diwali is known as the festival of lights and it is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over India. Like every year, there has been a report about noise pollution, this Diwali too. According to Awaaz Foundation, the trend in the reduction of noise pollution over the last several years has continued in Mumbai this year. Although peak decibel levels beyond 10:00 pm have increased from the last year. The highest decibel level recorded was 117.8 dB
On October 18, post-midnight, in Mumbai, a survey was done at different locations. Though, the deadline was of 10:00 pm, people continued to burst fire crackers till 12:00 am. And, the noise recorded after 10:00 pm was more compared to the noise recorded before 10:00 pm.
Speaking to My Medical Mantra, Sumaira Abdulali, convenor of Awaaz Foundation said, “Up to 10:00 pm, fewer firecrackers were burnt. However, post 10:00 pm; there was an increased use of crackers at Marine Drive, and noise levels were constantly over 100 dB. People burst firecrackers and suffer from respiratory disorders. Since, the government has urged people to not to burn firecrackers. The use of firecrackers was less.”
Abdullah said that during the Diwali, the times that crackers were lit have been recorded in places like Marine Dive, Linking Road, Andheri, Worli and at other places.
