Five roadside food items you must avoid during summer

Adulterated food is a big menace in India. It is a known fact that food adulteration is hazardous for human life. As such kind of food can take a toll on the human body. The government takes various measure to curtail and curb food adulteration in the country. Milk and food products are among the food stuffs which are adulterated.

This unethical practice proves to be a health hazard for the common citizens.

In order to curb this adulteration practices and take firm action against the manufactures, the government takes various measures  Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Food Safety Standard Association of India (FSSAI) continuously monitor the food which is being manufactured and supplied to the consumers.

 

While replying to a question pertaining to the food adulteration, Union Minister of State for Consumer Protection and Civic Supplies, Raosaheb Danave has given a written reply in Lok Sabha.

Shocking details have been revealed by the government in the written reply:

  • As per the government, 1/3 of the food samples collected in 2018-19 have been found to be adulterated.
  • During the past three years over 8,100 people have been convicted for manufacturing or supplying adulterated food items
  • Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are found to be the front runners in food adulteration. While in Maharashtra in the year, 2017-18 1,532 food samples were found to be adulterated and 83 people were convicted for the offences.
  • Over two years more than 6,000 people have been convicted for such offences
  • In order to put an end on the adulteration racket, the government, the government has also introduced the Consumer Protection Bill which mandates harsh penalty and even imprisonment for such offences

In the past, the Maharashtra FDA had cracked down on online food delivery companies and had asked them to maintain hygiene while cooking. The FDA had asked the food companies to also have their food delivery boys to be registered with them. It also made it mandatory for the delivery boys to undergo a health check-up.

The FDA had also suspended a number of eateries those who are listed with the online food delivery portals but cook food in an unhygienic condition.

Their objective is that online food delivery companies must supply quality food to consumers

The Commissioners of Food Safety of States/UTs have been directed from time to time to conduct regular surveillance and enforcement drives to curb the adulteration in food products. States undertake regular monitoring, inspection and sampling of food items to check compliance of the prescribed standards and take penal action in cases where the food products are found adulterated/misbranded or are of inferior quality
