2,430 children under the age of 15 diagnosed with TB, informs Maha health min

Health Minister of Maharashtra, Dr Deepak Sawant, has informed the Maharashtra assembly on Monday, July 9.

In a written reply to the star question asked by the legislatures, Maharashtra Health Minister Dr Deepak Sawant said, “If the adults in the family are suffering from TB, then the children in the family are likely to get contacted from TB. The other causes of TB are, Children who are infected from HIV, if the family is living in the congested area and malnutrition.”

Mumbai has recorded 4,891 cases of Multi-Drug Resistant TB (MDR-TB) in 2017. As compared to 2015, the cases rose by alarming 36 per cent. Mumbai contributes to 70% of the total MDR-TB cases reported in Maharashtra.

According to Health Ministry figures, India has 2.8 million cases of TB every year. Of these, 2.8% are new cases of MDR while another 11.2 are acquired cases of multi-drug resistance.

Every year, around four lakh people die due to TB in India, and around 29 lakh new cases are detected. Even though India aims to eradicate TB by the 2025, it seem like the country has an uphill battle ahead.
