WCNR 2018: ‘An holistic approach is important in treating epilesy’

  • Epilepsy is a neurological disorder.
  • Primary symptoms commonly include seizures.
  • Seizures have a range of severity depending on the individual.

Dr Pravina Shah, Ex HOD, department of Neurology, KEM Hospital, Mumbai and President of Samman Association said, “The public forum on epilepsy was an amazing session. Listening from the heart of the patients is wonderful as they teach us a lot. We strengthen our excellence through the patients.”

She added, “Listening to the patients is important, especially in chronic neurological diseases, where their feelings and emotions play a vital role. Not only patients, but also to their family members. Owing to which, the patient forum is extremely useful.”

Dr Shah thanked Dr Surya for organising such an informative conference. “I am very happy that Dr Nirmal Surya, founder of Epilepsy Foundation, a renowned name in the world for NeuroRehabilitation and the President of WCNR, and Dr Urvashi Shah have organised 9 such important public forums which were based on various chronic diseases and one can witness the amazing work. The forum will benefit the people.”

She further said, “I am a part of Samman Association and we are conducting epilepsy camps since last 10 years. Every 12 weeks, we go to a site near Pen and Dahanu. And have rural clinics. So, if each neurologist and his team give their services even once in two months in the rural areas, it will decrease the treatment gap for epilepsy in rural areas.”

Apart from the awareness on epilepsy, Dr Shah said, “We should have the availability of experts, medicines and resources. So, in the rural areas neurologists and their team should try and give continuous care to people.”

She signed off by saying, “The conference was excellent. It has created a lot of awareness on NeuroRehabilitation and the importance of the same. As the holistic care of the patient and the family members is important.”
