While many see physiotherapy as a part of healthcare that is mainly aimed at healing the injured and helping athletes to improve performance, there is so much more to this highly specialised field.

Dr Parag Sancheti, Chairman, Sancheti Hospital said that physiotherapists can help to alleviate pain, improve your body mechanics to reduce pain, aid in injury rehabilitation  and promote overall wellness. Up to 80% of the orthopaedic cases may not require surgery if physiotherapy is started at the right time.

Physiotherapists with doctors can diagnose the issues that could be causing lower back pain and can recommend and guide you through a series of exercises, stretches and postural correction activities.

Physiotherapy is also useful in management of pain in arthritis and can help avoid injuries and fall in aged people by working on balance, through series of exercises and programs.

Dr Sancheti added that with urban lifestyles generating every kind of ache imaginable, physiotherapy can help manage the pain and also help recognise physical signs of stress.

One of the major areas of concern remains that physiotherapy is still not considered as a great career option and with an ever increasing aged population, increased interest in sports and exercise the requirement of qualified physiotherapist will increase significantly in the time ahead.
