Varanasi: Portion of bridge collapsed – 50 trapped, 12 dead

A portion of an under construction flyover has collapsed near Cantonment railway station in Varanasi on Tuesday. Over 50 people are feared to be trapped under the debris. It is reported that those trapped under the debris are labourers

Varanasi: Portion of bridge collapsed, 50 trapped – many feared to be dead

The incident took place under Sigra police station near Lehartara Cancer Hospital where a part of an under-construction bridge collapsed, trapping many people who were passing underneath it. A few cars and a bus ferrying passengers are also trapped under the debris.

The flyover being built was supposed to connect Varanasi Cantt railway station with Lehertara. The construction of the flyover was to be completed several months ago.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed grief over the incident.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Maurya is reaching Varanasi. The officials have been directed to ensure early rescue and relief of all the trapped people
