Everyone is aware about Bollywood’s super hit flick ‘Munnabhai MBBS’, in which Actor Sanjay Dutt gives a magical hug to people to make them feel happy. Similarly, since 40 years, Sir JJ Hospital’s ward boy Munnna, is bringing smile on the patients and their relative’s face, by serving them and doing mimicry of Bollywood’s Shahenshah Amitabh Bachchan, to ease their agony and provide them, the much needed relief

Ravidas Babu Monashri’s family belongs to Mumbai. His father worked as a ward boy in Sir JJ Hospital. After father’s death, Ravidas was appointed on his place. Ravidas’s family’s financial condition is poor. Since he didn’t have his own house in Mumbai, for several years, he and his family lived in the Chawl in JJ Hospital’s Colony. Ravidas, who is a movie buff, was always keen on taking up acting and he participated in every cultural programme, conducted which were organised in his chawl. After which, people started knowing him as ‘Munna’.

Munna was also passionate about dancing and would make sure that he pursued his passion. Often, Munna was invited to dance in the function, cultural programmes and even marriages. But in 1978, after Big B’s super hit movie ‘Don’ released, which ruled the box office. People went gaga over Big B. Even, Munna’s favourite actor was Big B. After which Munna started imitating Big B and could deliver his dialogues with ease. Later, in 1981, Big B delivered another super hit flick ‘Yarana’, and the jacket he wore in the song ‘Sara zamana haseeno ka deewana’, became the talk of the town. Munna made the same jacket for himself and did his first mimicry show in his chawl. Munna’s show became popular and soon, people started addressing him as  Amitabh Bachchan.

While serving in Sir JJ Hopsital, Munna became very popular due to his mimicry, amongst his colleagues and other officers. His mimicry helped the patients and their relatives to forget their agony and distress for a while.

Speaking to My Medical Mantra, Munna said, “I am 50 years-old and have been doing mimicry since 30 to 40 years. People like it the most when I imitate Big B. till now; I have performed in more than 200 shows. I earn about Rs 10,000 per show. There are 8 to 9 people in my group and the money is equally divided amongst us. So I get around Rs 700 to 800.  And from the hospital I earn 18,000. But due to inflation, it is difficult to manage expenses on a daily basis.”

He added, “So I make it a point to take up shows and spread happiness amongst people. I am fortunate that I can do my bit to help people forget their problems, at least for some time. My duty timing in the hospital is from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm, after which, I do mimicry shows. And the money I earn from this shows is used for my family.”

Dr Tatyarao Lahane Dean of  Sir JJ Hospital said, “Munna is serving in Sir JJ Hospital, since many years. He was appointed on his father’s place. He has a good sense of humour which people appreciate a lot. He helps patients and their relatives to distress by doing Amitabh Bachchan’s mimicry, in hospital, he didn’t perform in any functions, but if he is willing to, we will ask him to perform on if we organise any programmes in the hospital.”

Munna’s colleague, Dilip Shinde, from ear-nose-throat department said, “We are working together in hospital since many years. People in the hospital are aware of Munna and his talent. We all enjoy thoroughly while he is around.”
