Thane: Patient’s relatives manhandle woman gynecologist, doctors body condemns the attack

The incident happened on Saturday, June 30, when a group of people barged into the labor ward of the Thane civil hospital. The men verbally abused a woman gynecologist, who was there on duty and manhandled her. A police case has been filed by the doctor

  • On the eve of the #DoctorsDay, a woman gynecologist, attached with Thane civil hospital, was abused and manhandled by the angry relatives of a patient.
  • The Maharashtra Association of Gazetted Medical Officers (MAGMO) has condemned the attack. They have written a letter to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis. 
  • The doctors association has raised the demand to put in place proper security measures to prevent the further attacks from happening.
  • In the past two months, this is the fifth case, where a doctor has been abused and attacked by the relatives.

A gynecologist, present in the ward during the incident, informed My Medical Mantra on condition of anonymity, “The baby was weighing just one kilogram and was also malnourished. The expectant mother was also suffering from anemia. So, in the best interest of the baby, the doctor advised the family to shift the patient to the JJ hospital as Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is available there.”

“But, the family refused to the doctor’s advice. And suddenly around 9.30 PM on Saturday, a group of men (relatives) barged into the labor ward and started abusing and threatening the doctor,” she added.

The patient was admitted to Thane civil hospital on June 29 and had undergone blood transfusion as the would be a mother was anemic.

While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Prasanna Deshmukh, the Former President of the Maharashtra Association of Gazetted Medical Officers (MAGMO), said, “The woman gynecologist had been telling this family, repeatedly, to shift the patient to the JJ hospital in the best interest of the baby.  But, the family refused to agree and listen to her advice. Instead, they barged into a labor ward and manhandled the doctor.”

Condemning the attack, on the healthcare professional, MAGMO has written a letter to Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis.

Dr Deshmukh further added, “We have requested the Chief Minister to look into this case very seriously, as the attacks on healthcare professionals are rising day by day. We want that the Medicare Act should be implemented strictly. The baby needed the best possible care to survive. Without a ventilator, it would have been a life-threatening for the baby.”

The gynecologist, who witnessed the incident said, “The doctor was doing her job to save the child. But, in the end, due to the lack of awareness among the people, the doctor on duty had to be at the receiving end. Due to the incident, the doctor and her family are living under stress.”
