Vikram Vishrant Yadav faced the inexplicable tragedy of losing a friend because they could not arrange for blood that matched his group. Determined that no one meets the fate as his friend, the service professional from Tasgaon, Maharashtra, to set up an association that provides the rarest of blood groups to those in need.
“My friend died from blood loss in a mishap in 1996. We were unable to arrange for blood for him. That is when I started an association, Bombay Blood Group – OHH Rare Blood Group Association, to help those in need of blood. OHH is a very rare blood group. There are only 179 people with this blood group in the country,” said Yadav.
The speciality of the association is that it sends donors at the doorstep of those in need of blood. “We conduct blood donation drives at least four times a month. Recently, a donor from the association went to Ranchi to give blood. The idea is that nobody should die only because they couldn’t get the required blood group,” he added.
The association has donors of all blood groups under its umbrella. At present, it has 282 WhatsApp groups facilitating almost all blood groups across the country. Blood donors from across the country are in awe of Yadav’s commitment to this cause.
“The work he does is immense and unimaginable. We support him in his endeavour. Whenever there is an emergency, we just know he is there,” said Pravin Patil from Manas Blood Bank.
The association is highly popular among blood banks, and rightly so, for all its efforts. “There are times when Yadav goes to the remotest of places and explains to people about importance of blood donation. He keeps a tab on all blood banks and if we fall short of any blood group, he makes sure to help us out too,” said Satish Shingade, manager of Shashwat Blood Bank.
“There are times when people can’t even afford to buy blood from banks. Yadav helps them by giving them a letter of reference. We provide them blood for free on the basis of the letter. This is our way of rewarding this noble man and his cause,” added Shingade.
