Beware! Consuming sugary foods can help cancer tumours grow

We know that almost all the cells in the human body require energy, and they derive this energy from the sugars in the food we eat. Cancer cells also require sugars to grow. But their glucose intake is a lot higher than that of healthy cells, as is the rate at which they ferment that glucose into lactic acid. This is known as the Warburg effect, and it may, scientists have hypothesised, have something to do with cancer's rapid growth rate

Beware! Consuming sugary foods can help cancer tumours growCancer cells could be benefiting from sugary foods. Eating sugar stimulates cancers to grow and continue to develop, the scientists claimed. The more sugar consumed, the more aggressive the cancer can become, they added. The findings could have “sweeping consequences” for diet recommendations in cancer patients. “Our research reveals how the hyperactive sugar consumption of […]

New study suggests, vitamin D might prevent type 1 diabetes

Previous research has indicated that low levels of vitamin D may raise the risk of type 1 diabetes. In response to such studies, scientists have been investigating whether or not higher levels of the vitamin could have a preventive effect against type 1 diabetes

New study suggests, vitamin D might prevent type 1 diabetes  Researchers found that children with low blood levels of vitamin D were more likely to experience islet autoimmunity, compared with those who had higher levels of the vitamin. Islet autoimmunity is a process wherein the immune system mistakenly attacks the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas, causing type 1 diabetes. Lead study author Jill Norris, […]

Does eating too much sugar cause diabetes?

Although eating sugar is not directly linked to developing diabetes, some evidence suggests that increased overall availability of sugar makes diabetes more common. A 2013 study that looked at 175 different countries found that more sugar in food supply increased diabetes rates

Does eating too much sugar cause diabetes?Sugar consumption will not directly cause diabetes. However, excess sugar consumption can cause weight gain. Obesity increases the risk of diabetes. Once a person has diabetes, eating too much sugar can make symptoms worse, since diabetes makes it more difficult for the body to manage blood sugar levels In a modern world, however, where food […]

What happens to your brain when you give up sugar?

Most of us prefer sweets over sour and bitter foods because, evolutionarily, our mesolimbic pathway reinforces that sweet things provide a healthy source of carbohydrates for our bodies

What happens to your brain when you give up sugar?Anyone who knows me also knows that I have a huge sweet tooth. I always have. My friend and fellow graduate student Andrew is equally afflicted, and living in Hershey, Pennsylvania — the “Chocolate Capital of the World” — doesn’t help either of us. But Andrew is braver than I am. Last year, he gave […]

Diet debate: Are diet drinks a no-go?

It's rare in life to have your cake and eat it too. But are low-calorie sweeteners the guilt-free way to be naughty?

Diet debate: Are diet drinks a no-go?Nobody is going to claim that regularly drinking full-sugar pop is good for you with a 500ml bottle of cola containing around 200 calories.
