Although she is no longer in our midst, former external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj will always be remembered for her compassionate and motherly disposition and her helpful nature on Twitter won the hearts of many. She was quick in her responses and helped people with medical visas and other emergencies.
She had immense faith in the Indian medical system and showed great trust in our doctors.
Swaraj Kaushal, the husband of late Sushma Swaraj, who goes by the username @GovernorSwaraj on Twitter, recently narrated an incident recalling the time Sushma Swaraj had to undergo a kidney transplant surgery in 2016.
Swaraj Kaushal stated, “AIIMS doctors were not ready for her kidney transplant surgery in India. She (Sushma Swaraj) said it was a matter of national pride and refused to go abroad. She fixed the date of her surgery and asked Dr Mukut Minz ‘Doctor Sahab – aap sirf instruments pakadaiye, Krishna meri surgery aap karenge.’”
Instead of seeking treatment at a private hospital, she decided to undergo treatment at AIIMS Hospital in New Delhi, as she had complete trust in our doctors. Even in her time of distress, Sushma Swaraj knew that she was in safe hands.
Kaushal further informed, “Just a day later, she was smiling in an easy chair. She said ‘if we go abroad, people will lose faith in our doctors and hospitals.’ She treated her surgery as a minor operation. She gave all credit to the AIIMS doctors who are best in the world, dedicated sisters and the staff.”
This incident showed the immense pride that Sushma Swaraj had on our doctors and how she believed in them. She knew that our doctors had as much expertise as doctors abroad.
Her husband, Swaraj Kaushal, believes that we as citizens of India should have more trust in our doctors. He shared this incident so that people can know that Sushma Swaraj was a humble person who believed that her country has one of the best medical systems in our world.
In conclusion, he said, “We should trust our doctors. We should have none of these Enquiry Commissions. That deters our brilliant doctors from operating on the VIPs. We salute our doctors in AIIMS. Nothing can match their competence and commitment.”
