Supple, strong and slim is mantra for pain-free life: Dr Nadkarni

In his book, Dr Nadkarni shares the simple way to avoid knee pain and surgery. He says that most patients ask him about avoiding knee surgery. He adds that knee surgery should be done when absolutely necessary and people have right to know about preventive measures

The complaints of knee pain are often heard, but if the pain goes out of hand, an orthopaedic surgeon usually recommends surgery. But it always a good idea to avoid a surgery, feels an orthopaedic surgeon. In his book ‘How to Avoid Knee Surgery’, Dr Dilip Nadkarni has given some simple and effective tips to improve the health of knee for those who want to avoid knee surgery.

“How to avoid knee surgery is the question I am asked most of the times by the patients and their relatives. People want to know how they can improve their knee health. In my clinic, every day I witness around 25-30 patients who are suffering from knee problem. Only one patient of them needs surgery. But it is important to tell others how they can avoid it,” said Dr Nadkarni. He has experience of 30 years and has performed around ten thousand surgeries.

According to Dr Nadkarni, the main reason behind rising complaints of knee problems is because the average longevity of the people has increased the lifestyle changes and the over-exercise done by people. “There are so many reasons contributing to this factor. People live longer now and youth is following an unhealthy lifestyle. Also, some do over-exercise which results in knee pain. I have explained such factors in detail in my book,” added Dr Nadkarni.

On being asked as to why he wants to tell people how to avoid a surgery in spite of being an orthopaedic surgeon, he said, “I have been asked this question in fraternity as well. Knee surgery should be done when it is absolutely necessary. I am not against it. In my view, people also have right to know about preventive measures. Personally, if such case arises in my family surgery would be the last thing I will think of. That’s why I have written this book.”

In the book, Dr Nadkarni has given simple formulas to live pain-free life. One of those is ‘Triple S’ formula. Dr Nadkarni’s Triple S formula stands for supple, strong and slim. “This is a formula to live pain-free life and it helps. There are simple ways to avoid knee pain. Of them, one is reducing the weight but it has to be reduced in proper manner,” he added.
