“I can’t control my tears to see Suhana with a functional heart. I will pledge to donate my heart the minute Suhana is discharged. The donor has given us a new life,” said Azad Alli Adam Shaikh, Suhana’s father after her heart transplant on Sunday morning.
My Medical Mantra has been reporting about the urgent need for a donor heart for Suhana Shaikh and the family’s struggle to collect fund for her surgery. Her heart function had dropped from 20 per cent to 10 per cent and was hospitalised three days ago.
While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Sanjeev Jadhav, heart transplant surgeon, who operated on Suhana said, “We were desperately looking for a donor heart to save her as she was lying on a deathbed due to dilated cardiomyopathy. We are glad that we managed to give her a new lease of life,” said Dr Jadhav.
The donor was a 47-year-old woman who was declared brain dead in Fortis hospital due to intra cerebral bleed. Her family donated her liver ,heart and kidneys.
“We are monitoring her vital parametres in ICU. She is doing well. However, she needs to looked after closely for few weeks as she was very sick before operation,” Dr Jadhav added.
Suhana, who resides in Mulund, was diagnosed with the end stage heart disease in April, 2017. Since then, the otherwise cheerful and active girl has been homebound, said her father. Shaikh is a BEST bus driver by profession and earns Rs 18,000 a month. “We are now looking forward to take her home at the earliest. We hope we manage to collect enough funds for her postoperative treatment,” said Shaikh.
