Informing the legislative council Medical Education Minister Girish Mahajan said, “The state government is having a close look at the issues. We have been monitoring the progress of the investigation as well. The state has asked the Vice-Chancellor of Maharashtra University of Health Sciences to conduct a thorough investigation.”

Mahajan further added, “The candidates who have been caught with the bogus additional degree degree were related to College of Physicians & Surgeons (CPS) Institute. They have have merely changed the photo and name on the original degrees. The Maharashtra Medical Council has started investigating all candidates who are registered post-2011. The investigation is in the final stages and we will take stern action against doctors with bogus degrees.”

Congress MLA, Anant Gadgil had raised the question of doctors operating with bogus degrees in the state.

While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Anant Gadgil said, “The Maharashtra Medical Council has received thousands of complaints regarding the bogus doctors. But, the council has taken action against only 20 doctors. This is a very serious issue that the doctors are openly operating on the degrees which are bogus.”

He further added, “Especially in rural areas, a large number of doctors are operating with the bogus degrees. The state has informed that there are 1,400 doctors with bogus degrees in the state. But, the number could be well more than 2,500 to 3,000.”

Dr Shivkumar Utture, President of the Maharashtra Medical Council said, “The council has charted a specific plan to end the menace of doctors with bogus degrees. We will take every effective measure to stop this. We have started scrutinising doctors who have got the degrees from the institutes or colleges outside Maharashtra. Doctors with bogus degrees are playing with the patient’s life and must be stopped.”
