This case was unique, as it was the family who approached the doctors after the patient’s death, for the purpose of cadaver donation. One of their family’s friends had recently done organ donation and so the family was aware about the concept of organ donation

Pune: Cadaver organ donation gives a new lease of life to five patients

Rajendra Patil, (name changed), a 31-year-old passed away due to a fatal accident. But his family has given him a way to live on after death through the means of organ donation.

After he was declared brain-dead on Monday, the cadaver donation took place Yashodhara Hospital in Solapur. Rajendra’s family who hail from rural parts of Solapur, gave their consent for organ donation.

The heart was given to Ruby Hospital, Pune, a kidney and pancreas sent to   to Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, Pune, the liver was given to Aaditya Birla Hospital in Pune. While the other kidney was given to a patient at Yashodhara Hospital itself, the eyes were given to a civil hospital in Solapur.

Aarti Gokhale, Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC), said, “The family was aware about organ donation. They voluntarily came forward and expressed their wish for organ donation. With more awareness, we will see more such cases, where family members will voluntarily come forward for organ donation.”
