Almost a year after two bone donations, Sion hospital now takes initiative to become the nodal authority for reception of bone donation. On Friday, a group of doctors from various departments met at Sion Hospital to discuss in detail about bone banking and bone donation, along with skin donation.
Dr. Abhijit Kale, assistant professor, Orthopaedic department at LTGM Sion Hospital who headed the discussion said, “The reason for our talk today is to spread awareness and need for bone donation to society. Sion hospital will be nodal centre for reception of bone donation.”
There is very little awareness about bone donation. Disfigurement of body is a cause of worry for most patients. Hence, whenever we operate on the body, we make sure that there is no disfigurement. For example, taking of alternate rib bones (12) from the body or taking a bone from the sheen region or hands will cause no disfigurement. The correct message about bone donation needs to go out to the people,” added Kale.
The first centre to store bones in Mumbai was started in 1988 in Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH). Today, about 10,000 bones are annually transplanted from the donor to the recipient successfully. “”It is a pleasure to do service to the society. And it is amazing to see such a nodal authority will soon be a reality,” said Astrid Lobo Gajiwala, head of Tissue bank at TMH.
The hospital held the talk with NGOs and organizations like Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (ROTTO), Mohan Foundation, Rajhans Pratishthan Trust etc.
