‘Send HIV patients to nearest ‘ICTC’ centre,’ AIDS control society to blood banks

Experts say there is a huge gap between the patients tested for HIV and those who return for the further treatment. So, the Mumbai District AIDS Control Society has come up with a new policy. It has asked the blood banks to send the patient to the nearest Integrated Counselling and Testing Centres (ICTC), as per the patient’s choice

When you go to a blood bank at a donate blood, the first thing the medical attendant does is to draw your blood for testing. But, few blood donors test positive for HIV and don’t turn up for the required counselling, when they are made aware of their condition.

A number of times, it is seen that the patients don’t turn up for the counselling as the ICTC centre are far away from their residence. Mumbai currently has 51 ICTC centres, where blood testing and counselling facilities are provided to the HIV positive patient.

While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Srikala Aacharya, Additional Project Director, Mumbai District AIDS Control Society said, “It is the responsibility of the concern blood bank to send the patient to the ICTC centre for further testing and counselling. But, in case a patient has been identified during the blood donating camp. Then it is difficult for the patient to reach the ICTC centre. So, we have provided the list of all ICTC centres to the blood banks. So, that they can send the patient to the nearest ICTC centre.”

The Mumbai District AIDS Control Society has written a letter on June 05, to all the blood banks in the city to implement this for the convenience of patients
