Sassoon Hospital ties up with Pune NGO for free eye checkup

Sassoon General Hospital’s ophthalmology department in Pune has started first of its kind outreach program by extending its services with the help of an NGO. When it becomes difficult for patients to reach out to the government hospitals every time they need, this government hospital has roped in an NGO to extend its services to other parts of the city

  • Every Tuesday,the Ophthalmology department of Sassoon will conduct a free eye check-ups and surgeries in Ghorpadi area of Pune.
  • The hospital has tied up with Shivsena Mahalaxmi Aarogya Kendra, an NGO, which works in the area of education and health in the city.
  • When Sassoon Hospital has its sub-centres in other districts, it is the first time that they have started it with the help of an NGO. 

Cataract, renal, cross eye, retinal are the types of surgeries that will be performed free of cost at the centre. Also, procedures like corneal retinal transplant and treatment for retinopathy of prematurity will be undertaken at the centre. The transportation facility from the centre will also be made available for free. The facility is set up at, Shivsena Mahalaxmi Aarogya Kendra, near seven loves chawk, on Shankar Sheth Road, Ghorpadi Peth, Pune.

Dr Sanjivani Ambekar, Head of Ophthalmology department at Sassoon general hospital, said, “We have started this centre under National Program for Control of Blondness. We are asked to do outreach activities under the program, where we go and provide the services beyond the territorial limit of our hospital. The NGO has given us space and other help as well.”

Dr Hemant Todkar, an Ophthalmologist and head of the NGO, said, “Sometimes, the patients give up on treatment just because the hospital is too far and they cannot afford the transportation cost. It is therefore necessary that public healthcare services should be reached to all the different areas in the city. It is with this motive that we have started this facility with the help of Sassoon Hospital.”
