Every day as many as 1,317 accidents take place and of which 413 people die on Indian roads, which means 55 accidents and 17 deaths in every hour

Akshay Kumar has highlighted national issues through his films. After highlighting Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and sanitation with ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’ and menstrual hygiene in ‘Pad Man’, Akshay Kumar is now the face of road safety movement. As the number of road accidents and fatalities continue to rise, Akshay has joined the initiative to spread awareness about safety.

Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari today launched road safety awareness video with Brand ambassador of road safety campaign actor Akshay Kumar in New Delhi.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Gadkari said, the priority of the Government is to reduce road accidents. He said, “The number of people killed in road accidents is much more than the total lives lost in wars.”

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Akshay Kumar said, “When I got to know about the shocking facts and figures related to road accidents which can be prevented, I was immediately on board for the Road Safety Campaign to help create awareness.”

Road accidents and India

  • In the year 2016, as many as 4,80,652 road accidents were reported
  • In the year 2015-16, total of 4,94,624 persons were injured
  • The year 2016 saw 1,50,785 accidental deaths in the country

Road accidents and Maharashtra

  • In the year 2017, Maharashtra has witnessed 35,853 accidents, and over 12,000 people have lost their lives, of which 2,789 deaths occurred in rural areas.
  • More than 20,000 passengers have been severely injured in these accidents.
  • In the first three months of 2018, from January to March – 9,243 accidents have occurred, killing 3,361 people.

Statistics on road accidents

  • There is one death every four minutes due to a road accident in India.
  • Drunken driving is one of the leading causes of road fatalities.
  • One serious road accident in the country occurs every minute and 16 die on Indian roads every hour.
