Pune police have declared that, from January 1, they will be implementing a strict drive to make two-wheeler riders wear helmets.
Police Commissioner of K Venkatesham, announced that the police will strictly implement the mandatory use of helmets. “We cannot continue with a situation where people are losing their lives almost every day for not wearing helmets while riding two-wheelers,” he said.
“This year alone, there have been 200 deaths of two-wheeler riders. We must do all that we can to prevent these deaths. The number of accidents is increasing every year,” he added.
A helmet is the single most effective way to help reduce head injury and death. No matter what your age or level of experience, whenever you ride a bike, a helmet should be worn.
Dr Ajay Kothari, orthopaedic spine surgeon from Pune, said, “When you are wearing a helmet during a fall or crash, the force of impact is distributed over the surface of the helmet, rather than concentrated on the head. Many orthopaedic related especially spinal cord-related injuries are prevented if one uses a helmet.”
