An intern doctor was beaten up by relatives of a woman who died on January 18 at GMC Hospital in Latur district of Maharashtra. Deceased Poonam Kamble was admitted for delivery. However, the child died in her uterus and she developed septicaemia – an infection in blood.

Sameer Gahane, an intern doctor, was posted in casualty department along with a resident doctor. Both of them were assigned the job to counsel Kamble’s relatives on her death. But, the relatives turned violent and started beating him.

“Kamble was admitted for delivery four days ago. While the child had died in uterus, she had developed septicaemia – an infection in blood. She was in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) when she succumbed to the infection at 2am last night,” said Dr Parag Narkhede, General Secretary, Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD).

He added that while Gahane and resident doctor were counselling relatives on her death, two of them started beating Gahane.

“Her husband and another relative turned violent and they were under the influence of alcohol,” said Narkhede.

Apart from the arrest of relatives, MARD has demanded strict action against security guard and policemen present in hospital during the time of incident.

“Gahane was hit twice in a span of 10 minutes. At the time of incident, three security guards and two policemen were present, but they were just mute spectators,” said Narkhede.
