R N Cooper Hospital gets Mumbai’s second sleep lab to study sleep disorders

The city has recently been witnessing a rise in the number of people having sleep disorders. R N Cooper Municipal General Hospital at Vile Parle, has received the city’s second sleep lab. It was inaugurated by MLA Amit Satam this Friday

Dr Ganesh Shinde, Dean of R N Cooper Municipal General Hospital, “The sleep lab will be helpful in studying sleep disorders in patients. The lab will have all the required apparatus for study of insomnia, hypersomnia (narcolepsy), parasomnia, REM disorders, ENT and chest obstructive sleep apnea, snoring, eye movements, oxygen and carbon dioxide studies, respiration and body movements during sleep”.

Shinde says that the hospital gets around 10 to 15 such cases on a monthly basis.

“Sleep problems, including snoring, sleep apnea, insomnia, sleep deprivation, and restless legs syndrome, are common. Good sleep is necessary for optimal health and can affect hormone levels, mood and weight,” added Shinde.

Along with the sleep lab, a cadaveric skill lab has also been inaugurated.

“It is a lab for medical students to learn and improve skills by practicing on dead body before doing actual operation on patient. And with the help of sleep lab we will observe the patients suffering from sleep acne and will decide which type of treatment should be given to patient,” said Dr Shashikant Mhashal, head of ENT department at R N Cooper Municipal General Hospital.

He added, “Sleep disorders are increasing due to poor physical exercise, over eating of junk food. Less sleep leads to diabetes, blood pressure, overweight, heart attacks”.

“I get 8 to 9 patients suffering from sleep disorder and they are increasing day by day. And most of the time this issue gets untreated and unaddressed. The ignorance leads to many serious health issues such as obesity, cardiovascular, insulin resistant,” said Dr Preeti Devnani, Clinical Director of the comprehensive sleep disorder Clinic in Mumbai.

Giving her view about sleep lab she said, ““It will be useful to study sleep-related disorders in patients. We need more number of such laboratories to give good treatment and addressed the sleep related issue”.

Devnani also advises to avoid sleep disorder one should have good, healthy night’s sleep to rejuvenate yourself along with healthy lifestyle.
