Pune will soon get the biggest mortuary in Maharashtra. Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) is all set to have the biggest mortuary in the state which will have a capacity for 100 corpses.
Praveen Shingare, Former Director of Medical Education of Maharashtra, said, “We have already released funds for the first phase. The new mortuary will be biggest in the state with capacity for 100 corpses.”
Dr S Punpale, director and head of the forensic department, BJ Medical College and Sassoon hospital said, “The provision for new mortuary is done as there is a increase in an autopsy. We had then asked for granting us a new facility to the state health department and accordingly we got one.”
According to officials, the facility will be totally air-conditioned, and it will have facilities like a research lab, auditorium, and a video conference room. It will be a four storied building near the newly constructed eleven storied building in SGH.
Rise in post mortems is the reason which triggered the demand by the hospital authority. Every year the hospital is seeing an increase of around 500 post-mortem cases. According to official data the hospital did more than 6, 500 post-mortem in the year 2018.
