- KEM Hospital Research Centre, Pune has come up with a unique initiative, where it has developed a test to find out whether a person has potential paedophilia tendencies.
- As a preventive measure, they will also receive treatment at the centre.
- The project aims to treating those who have not yet committed an act of child abuse, but are self-identified and out-of-legal-system person with paedophilia.
- The mainstay treatment will focus on specialised psychotherapy focusing on different dimensions of sexuality such as desire and attachment. Medical and psychological aid would be given as per the need.
Dr Vasudeo Paralikar, Principal Investigator and head of psychiatry department, KEM hospital, Pune, said, “We will be screening those self-identified people who think that they might have symptoms which are observed in paedophile people. We aim to have primary prevention with this initiative. We are appealing people that they should come and take treatment from us.”
While speaking about the tests that they have developed, he said, “We have adopted a model developed in Germany and have modified it according to Indian needs. We have also planned a follow-up and monitoring model. Our aim is to document all such cases, analyse it and then try to prevent them, so that the incidence of sexual violence by paedophiles becomes zero.”
The hospital authorities informed that they will spread awareness about the psychological disorder. Once the person is diagnosed to be suffering from it, the entire procedure will be confidential.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), sexual attraction towards the body forms of children or young adolescents is a psycho-sexual disorder which is termed as paedophilia.
Authorities said that the person can also visit ‘www.troubled-desire.com‘ which is a self-management tool, developed by the Berlin Institute of Sexology providing confidential and anonymous assessment and treatment.
It is a tool for paedophilia inclined adults and adolescents, their families, and acquaintances, and for professionals to get more information about paedophile and an appropriate treatment.
While research shows that persons afflicted with paedophilia live under constant pressure of this fear of loss of control, authorities said that testing these tendencies and treating them will help in lessening the cases of child abuse.
