The mind-numbing cases of child sexual abuse have triggered a city-based child surgeon to write a book. After treating several cases of child sexual abuse, the doctor launched the book on Thursday with an aim to prevent such incidents in the first place.

‘Let’s Protect Innocent Childhood’ goes the title of the book written by Dr Minakshi Nalbale – Bhosale, a Paediatric Surgeon at Sassoon General Hospital, Pune. The book, written in Marathi, underlines different measures to prevent child sexual abuse.

“Recently, a four-month-old girl, who was a victim of child sexual abuse, lost her life. Had she been hospitalised immediately after the abuse, we could have possibly saved her. However, the late admission at the hospital did give us any chance to save her. These cases underline sorry state of affairs in our society. While treating hundreds of such cases during my career, I realized the need to create awareness in society, and so I decided to write about it,” said Dr Minakshi.

In lucid language, the book explains different types of abuses, some social evils, and what should one do to prevent them or after abuse has taken place.

“Parents do not realize that even their child can be a victim. They do not keep a good vigil. Unfortunately, when abuse happens with their kid, they are not aware of what to do,” she added.

The book asks parents to keep trust in their kids, to let them make use of the internet under supervision, not to discriminate between the girl and boy child while upbringing them and importance of sex education. It also gives information on the POCSO act guidelines and information on social organisations which work in the area of child sexual abuse.
