Pune: Doctor starts matrimonial website for the physically disabled

A Pune-based orthopaedic paediatrician came across several patients who had some or the other form of disability. These patients were unable to find a spouse. This prompted him to start a matrimonial website for people with physical disabilities

The website, which is called www.divyangmatrimony.in was started by Dr Sameer Desai, it aims to help people with disabilities find a partner according to their needs.

“The website is free. It helps people with genetic counselling, marriage counselling, and also career counselling. Information about different disabilities is also displayed on it. When I had conducted a survey, I did not find a good matrimonial website for the disabled. Then, I came up with the idea of starting my own website,” said Desai.

The website has tied up with NGO’s named Saksham and Sarthak Education Trust, which works for disabled people.

“We have tied up with many institutes which work for disabled people and we appeal that if there are any more volunteers, who want to join us, then, they are always welcome,” he added.

According to government data, as of 2011, at least 2.2 per cent people in India (2.6 crore) fall in the category of physically challenged. Around 50 per cent of people with disabilities remain unmarried.
