After My Medical Mantra appealed its readers to lend a help to the 13-year-old Suhana Shaikh for gathering funds for getting her heart transplant operation, a lot of people have lent a helping hand. Even more, there have been various funds and trusts that have agreed to help the family in whatever way they can.
“I am very thankful for all the help that has come our way. However, there’s a lot more to pay,” said Ajad Alli Adam Shaikh, Suhana’s father.
On August 7, My Medical Mantra had first reported about Suhana, when her family was struggling to get a donor heart for her heart transplant and gather funds for the same. Diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, Suhana was in a dire need of heart transplant after her functioning of heart dropped to 10 per cent.
When Fortis Hospital received a call on August 19 for a potential organ donor, the hospital administration didn’t think twice before going ahead with the surgery even though the family didn’t have funds for the same. “It was a rapid decision taken by the management to go ahead with Suhana’s heart transplant because of her deteriorating heart function. The funding received so far for her treatment is deficient. There have been monetary commitments from few,” said Dr S Narayani, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospital, Mulund.
The Mulund resident had to discontinue her school after she was diagnosed with the end-stage heart disease and was home bound. “Since April 2017, she was hospitalized five times. We are happy that our daughter has got a new lease of life,” said Suhana’s father.
Azad, who is a BEST bus driver by proffession, is now running pillar to post to gather the funds to pay the hospital bills and ensure his daughter gets the required post-operative care and treatment which is equally crucial for her survival.
“No amount of thanks to the doctors is enough for the help they have provided. But now, our major concern is paying the hospital bill. The surgery cost is Rs 20 lakh, including the post-operative stay for about 21 days,” he said.
Azad’s monthly salary is Rs 18,000 and according to doctors, Suhana will be on immunosuppressant medication whole life to avoid her body rejecting the transplanted organ.
“She will need immunosuppressants (drugs or medicines that lower the body’s ability to reject a transplanted organ) for life long. They cost around Rs 15,000 per month. We hope some good souls come ahead and help us with the funds,” he added.
