Period awareness: Twinkle Khanna, Aamir Khan accept #PadManChallenge

Akshay Kumar, Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte are all set to hit the big screen with yet another much-awaited film ‘PadmMan’. The film is produced by Twinkle Khanna and directed by R Balki. It is inspired by the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, a social activist from Tamil Nadu who revolutionised the concept of menstrual hygiene in rural India by creating a low-cost sanitary napkins machine and invented low-cost sanitary pads. The interesting plot of the film ‘PadMan’ is about breaking the taboos related to menstrual hygiene. Having said that, the film’s producer, @mrsfunnybones aka Twinkle Khanna was challenged by A Muruganantham to post a picture of holding a pad just like he himself has.

He challenged all the leading actors of the film- Akshay Kumar, Radhika Apte, Sonam Kapoor along with Twinkle Khanna. Khanna accepted the challenged and she tagged the other Bollywood celebrities to do the same.

Within minutes of the challenge, Aamir Khan posted a picture holding a pad.

As per the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) findings:

62% young women in the country in the age group 15 to 24 years use cloth for menstrual protection.

42% women use sanitary napkins.

16% use locally prepared napkins.

The survey was conducted in the year 2015-2016.

Majority of women in rural areas did not use a hygienic method of menstrual protection with the survey findings indicating that only 48% of those surveyed in rural India used sanitary napkins during their menstrual cycle as against 78% in urban parts of the country.
