Pathologists should only carry out the blood tests, says SC

Pathologist is one who identifies diseases and conditions by studying abnormal cells and tissues. But, in Mumbai and other states, the number of bogus pathologists has gone up. To run the laboratory, the pathologist has to take ‘MBBS’ and the pathology degree. But, sometimes, instead of expert doctors, lab technicians give blood reports to the patients. After examining the blood report, the doctors treat patients. As, the wrong report can be risky for the patients

According to Supreme Court’s decision, now, those who have ‘pathology’ degree will only be able to conduct blood test. And those pathologists who are registered with Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) will only have to conduct tests.

Those who have ‘pathology’ degree will only be able to run the laboratory. Untrained people shouldn’t be given this right was the demand made by the Maharashtra Association of Practicing Pathologists and Microbiologists (MAPPM).

Speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Prasad Kulkarni, member, Executive Council, Maharashtra Association of Practising Pathologists and Microbiologists (MAPPM) said, “Those pathologists who are registered with Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC), will only have to conduct tests. And the doctor only signs the report. To help these doctors, there are technicians under them. After 10th, by doing different diploma courses, one can work as a technician. Who can only take blood samples and cannot give the report. But, at some places, the technicians are giving report to the patient which is wrong.”

He added, “This decision should be followed soon. Doctors should send patients to the laboratory where there are pathologists. And pathologist should only give patients their report.”
