Organ donation: Two-year-old, Maha’s youngest donor saves four lives

Ivan Prabhu was admitted to Mumbai's Bombay Hospital on February 4 as he was suffering from a rare brain tumour. But, while undergoing treatment Ivan was declared brain-dead. Doctors counselled the family and the family agreed to donate his organs. The two-year-old boy has given a new lease of life to four people who have been suffering from end-stage diseases

Two-year-old Ivan Prabhu from Pune, Maharashtra had been diagnosed with a rare brain tumour. He was admitted to Mumbai’s Bombay Hospital on February 04.

During the course of the treatment, doctors declared Ivan brain-dead. According to doctors, though his brain was damaged, the rest of Ivan’s vital organs were fit for the organ donation process. So, the doctors counselled the family for donating the organs. And after the family consented for the same, the organ donation process was carried out.

While speaking to My Medical Mantra Dr Gautam Bhanshali, a general physician attached to Bombay Hospital said, “It’s a very bold decision taken by Ivan’s parents. They were in grief, but, gathered the courage to donate his organs. The little child has saved the lives of four people. I salute Ivan’s parents.“

The organ donation process was duly carried out as per the guidelines of the Zonal Tissue Transplant Committee.

According to ZTCC, the heart was transported immediately to Chennai, both the kidneys have been sent to Mumbai’s Lilavati and Global hospital, and the liver has been given to Thane’s Jupiter hospital.

Bombay Hospital’s spokesperson Dr Sagar Sakhale also played a very important role in the organ donation process.
